battle of the brains

A day or so ago people were talking in the tea-room about a clip on TV that showed chimpanzees beating humans hands-down on a test of memory. This piqued my curiosity, because I don't watch a lot of TV & hadn't seen the show. But today I found a link to it – have a look! I found it totally mind-boggling…

… and I must chase up the original paper, on which the Telegraph's story is based. It certainly opens up some interesting questions on similarities and differences in cognitive ability in chimpanzees & humans, and what's driven their evolution. (If you've read the article that accompanied the video clip, you'll have seen that one of the older chimps was taught to count – & to associate the appropriate numerical symbol with the matching number of 'real-world' articles. Evidence of considerable capacity for abstract thought!)
