Cue more &#8216;oh, wow!&#8217; moments as the scale of the building became apparent &#8211; this is what it looks like once you&#8217;re through the doors (&amp; into the wondrous coolness of the huge space):<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px;width: 586px;height: 339px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - entrance to flower dome.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"899\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20entrance20to20flower20dome.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This dome contains gardens, or garden collections, from around the world, including the displays of flowers that give it its name. I was fascinated by the visual juxtaposition of the gardens with the almost futuristic cityscape beyond the conservatory walls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px;width: 560px;height: 317px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - flower dome &amp; cityscape.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"899\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20flower20dome202620cityscape.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - flower dome hibiscus.jpg\" width=\"455\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20flower20dome20hibiscus.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From some perspectives the dome&#8217;s interior gives the impression of being heavily forested, &amp; it&#8217;s at this point I had to keep reminding myself that&nbsp;<i>none of this was here even 4 years ago<\/i>: all the mature trees were brought onto the site from elsewhere&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px;width: 553px;height: 338px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - flower dome forest look.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"899\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20flower20dome20forest20look.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&#8230; including a 1000-year-old olive tree. We could only guess at the huge amount of work (by goodness knows how many gardeners) to get all these plants established.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px;width: 550px;height: 441px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - flower dome with olive tree.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20flower20dome20with20olive20tree.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a wonderful collection of xerophytes: plants adapted to life in a dry environment. The plants in the following photo show a range of interesting adaptations related to this lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0px auto 20px;width: 576px;height: 312px\" class=\"mt-image-center\" alt=\"singapore - xerophytes.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"899\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.waikato.ac.nz\/bioblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/singapore20-20xerophytes.jpg\" \/>And scattered through the dome is a range of artwork,&nbsp;including this lovely botanically-based eagle, developed from the roots of a&nbsp;tree.
