昨日、テレビでジェイミー･オリバーのクリスマス･ディナーの番組を見ました。そう言えばクリスマスまであと1週間ですね! 日本はキリスト教の国でないからでしょう、12月25日は祝日[しゅくじつ]ではありません。会社も銀行もふつうに営業[えいぎょう]していますし、学校も開いています。もちろん、冬休み中なので授業[じゅぎょう]はありませんけど、先生は学校で働いています。
じゃあ日本のクリスマスは何もないのか?－もちろん、そんなことはありません。デパートやレストランにとっては大きなビジネス・チャンスですから、いろいろなクリスマス商品[しょうひん]や特別[とくべつ]メニュがあります。子どもたちはクリスマス･プレゼントを楽しみにしています。でも、伝統的[でんとうてき]には日本にとっては正月の方が大切です。
NZでは、いつも開いているスーパーマーケットが12月25日に閉[し]まるので、はじめはとてもびっくりしました。
I watched Jamie Oliver’s programme last night and realised that there was only a week to go – yes I am talking about Christmas! Did you know that Christmas Day in Japan was not public holiday? We all work on the 25th of December as usual. Shops are open, banks are open and schools are open (of course there is no class as it is during winter holiday, but normally the staff is at school to work as usual). So I was very surprised to find even Pak’n Save was closed on Christmas Day when I came to NZ some years ago.
This does not mean we do not do anything for Christmas in Japan. As you might guess this is a great opportunity for business people to get going. Department stores, supermarkets, and any retailers are full of Christmas products now. Kids always look forward to get Christmas presents as well.
Traditionally New Year’s Day is far more important for Japanese rather than Christmas.
