きのうはオークランド･アニバーサリー･デーで、ハミルトンは祝日[しゅくじつ]でした。祝日は英語でPublic holidaysですが、日本の祝日がいくつあるか、数[かぞ]えてみました。15あることがわかりました。年[とし]のいちばんはじめの祝日はもちろん1月1日、元日[がんじつ]です。そして最後[さいご]の祝日は12月23日の天皇誕生日[てんのうたんじょうび]です。祝日の数[かず]は15なのですが、その祝日が日曜日[にちようび]になったり、祝日と祝日の間に挟[はさ]まれたりすると、余分[よぶん]の祝日ができることに法律[ほうりつ]で決まっています。例[たと]えば、5月3日は憲法記念日[けんぽうきねんび]ですが、今年は日曜日です。ですから、休みが1つふえます。5月の祝日は複雑[ふくざつ]で、5月4日は国民の日、5月5日はこどもの日、という祝日なので、5月3日の余分の休みは、今年は5月6日(水)ということになります。おもしろいですね。
It was Auckland Anniversary Day yesterday and we had a holiday yesterday in Hamilton. Do you know how many public holidays Japan has? I counted yesterday and found out that there were 15 holidays. The first one of year is of course, the 1st of January, and the last one is the 23rd of December – this is Emperor’s birthday.
When a public holiday falls on Sunday we have an extra day off in Japan. For example, the 3rd of May is a public holiday called Constitution Memorial Day and it falls on Sunday this year. So normally the following Monday, which is the 4th of May should be an alternative holiday. BUT. This time of year is actually a bit complicated. The 4th and also the 5th of May are public holidays, so consequently the 6th of May becomes an alternative holiday from the 3rd of May this year.
