「ちらし」というのは英語でto sprinkle over とかto scatter overという意味[いみ]です。

It’s 3 March, yes, Doll’s Festival Day today. Families with girls often eat sushi and drink white sake and wish girls’ healthy growth. For this occasion, we normally eat a particular type of sushi called chirashi-zushi.  Have you eaten chirashi-zushi before? “Chirashi” means “to sprinkle over” or “to scatter over.” This type of sushi is called in this way because we scatter all sorts of fish and shellfish, veges, and usuyaki-tamago (crepe looking like omelette) over vinegar-flavoured rice. The photo above shows gorgeous chirashi-zushi I had before at a sushi restaurant in Yamagata prefecture, Japan. This one was particularly fantastic (of course, it was made by a professional sushi chef!) and so delicious. The other photo shows Hina Dolls my friends have displayed for their daughter. Aren’t they cute?
