この写真[しゃしん]の植物[しょくぶつ]が何かわかりますか。これは紫蘇[しそ]と言います。日本の野菜[やさい]です。ハーブと言った方がいいかもしれません。ミントやバジルの親[しん]せきです。とても強くていい香[かお]りがします。わたしの大好きなハーブです。
日本人にとっては普通[ふつう]のハーブで、1年中どこのスーパーでも買うことができます。しかし、ニュージーランドのスーパーで売っているのを見たことがありません。幸[さいわ]い、種[たね]を買うことができたので、自分[じぶん]で育[そだ]てました。
ニュージーランドで食べたい時は自分で育てるしかないので、食べられるようになるまで時間がかかります。また夏[なつ]しか育てられないので、とても貴重[きちょう]な（!）ハーブです。これからしばらく大切に食べるつもりです。
Do you know what the plant in the photo above is? This is called shiso in Japanese and the English name is perilla. It is related to mint and basil. You might be able to tell that from the shape of flowers. It has strong fragrance. This is my favourite herb.
This is one of the common herbs for Japanese people and you can buy it at any supermarkets in Japan all year around. I have never seen this here though. I fortunately found seeds so grew it in my own garden.
You cannot buy it here and the only way to get it is to grow it on your own. It takes some time and I can grow only in summer. This is very precious!
