Children’s Day

It’s 5 May today and this is a public holiday called Children’s day in Japan. We do all sorts of things wishing children’s healthy growth.

The households with boys decollate koinoboari and/or kabuto. You can see koinobori in the photo – this is koi-carp shaped banner. We decollate it wishing that our boys will be strong like koi-carp which swim up waterfalls. Kabuto is samurai helmet and I suppose that parents wish their boys will be strong like samurai. You might think it’s not fair to girls because today is called CHILDREN’s day. But it is not – because we also have a day called Doll Festival on 3 March and this is for girls.

We eat some traditional Japanese sweets such as chimaki and kashiwamochi today. The photo shows chimaki on the left and kashiwamochi on the right, which was rice cake with azuki-bean paste wrapped with leave. I heard Kashiwa has some special meaning. I love these Japanese sweets and want to eat anytime all year around, not just today!
