日本のカレーは、本当[ほんとう]にすごいです。
Japanese curry is just unbelievable!
日本[にほん]のカレーの起源[きげん] (kigen means origin) についてはいろいろ言[い]われています。基本的[きほんてき]には、カレーは海軍[かいぐん] (kaigun means Navy) で最初[さいしょ]に作[つく]られたということです。先日[せんじつ]、長崎[ながさき]県[けん]の佐世保[させぼ]市[し]というところで「ごちそうフェスタ」という行事[ぎょうじ](gyoji means event) がありました。佐世保[させぼ]には大[おお]きな港[みなと] (minato means port) があり、佐世保[させぼ]のほか、例[たと]えば広島[ひろしま]県[けん]の呉[くれ]市[し]などもそうです。これらの市[し]には昔[むかし]海軍[かいぐん] がいました（港[みなと]があるので）。それで、現在[げんざい]、昔[むかし]の海軍[かいぐん]の料理[りょうり]を使[つか]って町[まち]おこし (machiokoshi means boosting the economic development of the city) が行[おこな]われています。「ごちそうフェスタ」はそのための行事[ぎょうじ]でした。カレーライスはもちろん、その町[まち]おこしのための大切[たいせつ]な料理[りょうり]です。
海軍[かいぐん]と言[い]えばカレーなのです! いやあどうやって説明[せつめい]しようかなあと考[かんが]えていたら、ウィキペディアに日本語[にほんご]と英語[えいご]で説明[せつめい]がありました! 写真[しゃしん]もあります! びっくり! 興味[きょうみ]がある人[ひと]は是非[ぜひ]、ウィキペディアを見[み]てください。
今[いま]の日本[にほん]に海軍[かいぐん]はありません。今[いま]は、海上[かいじょう]自衛隊[じえいたい]です。そして、今[いま]でも海上[かいじょう]自衛隊[じえいたい]では毎週[まいしゅう]金曜日[きんようび]にカレーライスを食[た]べるそうです。そして、海上[かいじょう]自衛隊[じえいたい]のウェブサイトにはカレーライスのレシピもあるんですよ! カレーライス、万歳[ばんざい]!
There are all sorts of stories about the origin of Japanese curry. But basically the Navy was responsible for the very first Japanese curry recipe. By the way, there was an event held in Sasebo city, Nagasaki prefecture last weekend. The event was called “Gochiso Festa (Feast Festival)”. Several cities in Japan including Sasebo city, Kure city in Hiroshima prefecture and so on have a good port and those places were once famous for the base of the Navy. Nowadays, those cities try to boost the economic development with using the special dishes the Navy people used to eat. Gochiso Festa was organised for that perpose and Japanese curry played an important role in it.
When I was organizing this entry, I felt a bit overwhelmed by too much info of this “Navy and curry” topic and wondered how I should explain it… then voila! – I found a page on Wikipedia explaining the related matters and it even has the English version with various photos!
Japan no longer has the Navy, but the Maritime Self-Defense Force. And people in the Maritime Self-Defense Force still eat Japanese curry every Friday now. And its official website even shows various curry recipes! Isn’t it amazing!?
