Ara-saa

Do you know what "Ara-saa” is? How about “Ara-fo” then?

I did not know these words till recently, actually. “Ara-saa” and “ara-fo” are both Wasei eigo. Wa means Japan, sei is to make something, and eigo is English; therefore, Wasei eigo is a new (English, but not really…) word made out of English words in Japan. “Ara-saa” refers around thirty (year old) people and “ara-fo” is – now you know – around forty (year old) people.

These words, as far as I understand, were created for marketing purposes. The marketing people investigate a sort of average life style of thirty or forty yr old people and produce something appealing to them. Many of them are still single and working; therefore, tend to have money to spend more than any other groups of people.

I read an article in Asahi Shimbun newspaper on the Internet the other day about certain types of appliances made targeting “Ara-saa” (Around thirty). People around thirty, particularly people living somewhere like in Tokyo, often live in a small 1 bedroom apartment by themselves. The marketing people believe that small stylish designed appliances would sell well to them. Those people tend to work till late, therefore, come home late. This means 1) they can do washing only at night → they want to have a quite washing machine, and 2) they do not have time to cook → they would like to have a big freezer – this is how the marketing strategy goes.

This page shows some appliances which are supposed to sell well to “Ara-saa”!
