地震 Earthquake

A big earthquake hit Haiti a week ago. 15 years and three days ago, namely on the 17th of January 1995, a big one hit Japan as well.

その15年前[ねんまえ]の地震[じしん]では6300人あまりの人が亡[]くなりました(nakunaru, in this case means to die)。 ハイチでは20万人[まんにん]が亡[]くなったと言[]われています(iwareteiru is it is said that ~)。 一刻[いっこく] (ikkoku is a moment)も早[はや]く、多[おお]くの救援[きゅうえん]物資[ぶっし] (kyuen busshi means aid supplies)がハイチの人たちに届[とど]く(todoku is to reach)ことを祈[いの]っています。

The earthquake in Japan killed over 6,300 people. The city councils, public sectors and so on have still been working on rebuilding the community and helping people affected by that. It is said that 200,000 people were killed in Haiti. There are more injured people. It takes a long long time to recover from the damage done by such a big earthquake. I hope all sorts of aid supplies will reach them soon.
