海苔の養殖 Nori farming

日本人[にほんじん]は海苔[のり] (= nori, a type of seaweed)が大好きです。そして、日本[にほん]のあちこちで海苔[のり]の養殖[ようしょく] (yoshoku means farming)が行[おこな]われています。

Japanese people like to eat nori, a kind of seaweed and there are nori-farming organised at various areas in Japan.

[いま]、海苔[のり]の収穫[しゅうかく] (shukaku means harvest)の最盛期[さいせいき] (saiseiki means high time)なんだそうです。朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]で読[]みました。このページには、兵庫県[ひょうごけん]の近[ちか]くの海[うみ]の海苔[のり]の養殖場[ようしょくじょう]の写真[しゃしん]があります。この養殖場[ようしょくじょう]はとても大きいです。100mあまりの黒[くろ]い帯[おび] (obi is ribbon)が10kmも続[つづ]いているそうです。この養殖場[ようしょくじょう]の海苔[のり]は硬[かた]くて丈夫[じょうぶ] (jobu means robust)だそうです。だから、巻[]き寿司[ずし]を作[つく]るときに、形[かたち]が崩れ[くずれ] (kuzureru means to break)にくい(~nikui means hard; not easy)ので、いいそうです。

It is time to harvest farmed nori now according to Asahi Shimbun News. This page shows a photo of nori farming at Hyogo prefecture. The scale of the farming in this area is really big and many nori ribbons are floating on the sea. The length of each ribbon is around 100m and those ribbons are laid over 10 km! Nori cultivated in this area is famous for its robustness and it is good for making rolled sushi – it is easy to make a good shape of sushi.
