Monthly expenses

ある研究所[けんきゅうしょ] (= a think tank)がいろいろ調[しら]べて(shiraberu means to investigate)、計算[けいさん]しました(keisansuru means to calculate)。

How much does a 23 yr old single guy need to live in Tokyo, do you think? A think tank in Japan did a survey and calculated it. For this calculation, something 70% or more people had was acknowledged as necessities – I suppose, a mobile phone would be one of them. This calculation was also based on the assumption that breakfast and dinner was cooked by himself at home and lunch would be takeaway or something around 500 yen (about 8 NZ dollars). So how much would it be, do you think?

This site has a table showing the results of their calculation. In total,  the think tank came up with 233,801 yen per month, which is around 3,770 NZ dollars. The food expense was calculated as 39,564 yen (about 638 NZ dollars) and the rent/water/electricity bills was 60,719 yen (about 979 NZ dollars) per month. This figure does not represent the amount a person definitely absolutely need to survive. The think tank explained that this was “the amount a young man needs to live in Tokyo reasonably.” So for example, this figure includes the expense a person needs “to hang around with friends three times a month”.

What do you think?
