Into the unknown

イギリスの雑誌[ざっし]『エコノミスト』の最新号[さいしんごう] (= the latest issue)に、日本[にほん]についてのスペシャル・レポートがあるそうです。タイトルは「未知[みち]の世界[せかい]へ(= into the unknown)」。これは歴史上[れきしじょう] (= in history)、どの国くに]よりも高齢化[こうれいか] (= aging)が進[すす]んでいる日本[にほん]社会[しゃかい]の実態[じったい] (= the reality)をレポートしているそうです。詳[くわ]しいことが知[]りたい人[ひと]は、この雑誌[ざっし]を読[]むか、または雑誌[ざっし]ウェブサイトにアクセスするかしてください。

The latest issue of “The Economist” has a special report on Japan entitled “Into the unknown”: this is about the aging populations of Japan. This article apparently reports the reality of Japan, which is aging faster than any country in history. If you want to know more, here is its website.

[わたし]の知[]っている限[かぎ]りでは、医療[いりょう] (= medicine)の進歩[しんぽ] (= progress; improvement)などの理由[りゆう]で、人々[ひとびと]は長[なが]く生[]きられるようになりました。そして、最近[さいきん]の若者[わかもの] (= young people)は子[]どもをほしがらなくなっています-これはとても複雑[ふくざつ]な問題[もんだい]なので、簡単[かんたん]に説明[せつめい]できません。1つ言[]えるのは、今[いま]の日本[にほん]で子[]どもを育[そだ]てる(= to raise)ことは簡単[かんたん]ではない、ということです。例[たと]えば、保育園[ほいくえん] (= crèche)の数[かず]が足[]らない(= not enough)し、こともの教育費[きょういくひ](= cost of education)がとても高[たか]いし、会社[かいしゃ]で働[はたら]く時間[じかん]があまり自由[じゆう]ではない(= inflexible)、ということなどです。このようないろいろな問題[もんだい]が、今[いま]の若者[わかもの]に家族[かぞく]を作[つく]りたがらなくしているのです。

結果的[けっかてき] に(= consequently)、お年[とし][]りの数[かず]が増[]えて、子[]どもの数[かず]が減[]るということになっています。
 
 
As far as I know, because of the progress of medical technology, older people could live longer now. Plus, young couples nowadays do not want to have children in Japan—this is a complicated issue, so I cannot discuss light-heartedly. But one thing I have known of is that it is not easy at all to raise a child in Japan in many respects; for example, there are not enough crèche, too much cost for child education, inflexible working hour systems of Japanese companies and so on. These sorts of issues have strongly discouraged young generation to make a family now. Consequently, the nation has more older people and less younger people…
