地震によるパイロットへの非常事態 Emergency for airplane pilots caused by the quake

日本[にほん]の地震[じしん]の被害[ひがい] (= damage)は本当[ほんとう]に大変[たいへん]です。いろんなところで大変[たいへん]ですが、飛行機[ひこうき]のパイロットの人[ひと]たちもほんとうに大[おお]きな影響[えいきょう] (= influence)を受[]けた(= to receive)ということを知[]りました。

The earthquake has caused all sorts of damage in Japan. I did not know until today that airplane pilots were massively influenced by the earthquake as well.

これはあるアメリカの飛行機[ひこうき]のパイロットの方[かた]ブログです。英語[えいご]です。日本語[にほんご]で読[]みたい人[ひと]は、ここに日本語[にほんご]バージョンがあります。 

簡単[かんたん]に説明[せつめい]すると、成田[なりた]空港[くうこう] (= Narita Airport)に到着[とうちゃく]する(= to land)直前[ちょくぜん]に地震[じしん]が起[]きました。そして、空港[くうこう]が閉鎖[へいさ] (= to be closed)されました。そして、多[おお]くの飛行機[ひこうき]が新[あたら]しい空港[くうこう]をすぐに(= immediately)探[さが]さなくてはいけなく(= to have to find)なりました。いろんな空港[くうこう]がすぐに満員[まんいん] (= full)状態[じょうたい]になり、日本[にほん]の上空[じょうくう]を長[なが]い間[あいだ]ぐるぐると空港[くうこう]を探[さが]しながら飛[]ばなければいけなかったそうです。でも、アメリカから日本[にほん]へ飛[]んできたところですから、燃料[ねんりょう] (= fuel)があまりありませんでした。ほんとうに、大変[たいへん] (= challenging; tough)だったそうです。

Let me give you a brief summary here: basically the quake occurred just before his scheduled landing time. After the quake, Narita Airport soon got closed. Many pilots including him were suddenly thrown into an emergency situation—all of them IMMEDIATELY had to find a new airport to land. As you imagine, many airports quickly became full. It was challenging to all pilots, but particularly for him as he just flew over to Japan from the U.S. His airplane did not carry much spare  fuel!!   It was indeed challenging…
