濱田[はまだ]庄司[しょうじ]さんは日本[にほん]で有名[ゆうめい]な、そして人気[にんき]がある陶芸家[とうげいか] (= potter)でした。

もう随分[ずいぶん]前[まえ]に亡[な]くなりましたが、濱田[はまだ]さんの作品[さくひん] (= products)は今[いま]でもとても人気[にんき]があります。濱田[はまだ]さんは1960年[ねん]台[だい]にニュージーランドに来[き]ました。だから、ニュージーランドの人も濱田[はまだ]さんを知[し]っています。濱田[はまだ]さんはニュージーランドの陶芸家[とうげいか]に大[おお]きな影響[えいきょう]を与[あた]えました(eikyo wo ataeru means to give a big influence)。
濱田[はまだ]さんの作品[さくひん]は、益子焼[ましこやき]という焼[や]き物[もの]です。益子焼[ましこやき]は、多[おお]くの陶芸家[とうげいか]たちが日本[にほん]の栃木県[とちぎけん]の益子[ましこ]で作[つく]っています。栃木県[とちぎけん]は東京[とうきょう]の北[きた]にあります。ここも、先月[せんげつ]の地震[じしん]で大[おお]きな被害[ひがい] (= damage)を受[う]けました。昨日[きのう]の朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]の記事[きじ]で知[し]りました。皿[さら]など多[おお]くの作品[さくひん]が壊[こわ]れてしまいました。そして、作品[さくひん]を作[つく]るための窯[かま] (= kiln)も壊[こわ]れたそうです。朝日新聞[あさひしんぶん]の記事[きじ]には写真[しゃしん]もあります。
ここも復興[ふっこう] (= recovery)に時間[じかん]がかかりそうです。ですが、今月末[こんげつまつ]から陶芸市[とうげいいち] (= a pottery market)が行[おこな]われるそうです。毎年[まいとし]この益子[ましこ]では、春[はる]と秋[あき]に大[おお]きな陶芸市[とうげいいち]が開[ひら]かれています。全国[ぜんこく]から多[おお]くの人[ひと]が来[き]ます。今年[ことし]は4月29日から5月5日までです。もし機会[きかい] (= chances)があれば、是非[せひ]行[い]ってみてください。詳[くわ]しくは、この益子町観光協会[ましこちょうかんこうきょうかい] (= Mashiko Town Tourist Association)のホームページで見[み]られます。
Hamada died quite a long time ago, but he is still really popular. Hamada visited New Zealand in 1960’s and made a big impact in the pottery society in this country.
Hamada’s products are categorised “Mashiko-yaki”—this is a type of pottery (defined by the method and the clay the potters use, I reckon…). Many potters still produce many mashiko-yaki potteries in Mashiko town, Tochigi prefecture. Tochigi prefecture is close to Tokyo.
I did not know until I read this article in Asahi Shimbun Newspaper that Tochigi prefecture also received extensive damage caused by the earthquake last month. Many plates, bowls, and so on were broken in Mashiko town. Some potters got their kilns badly damaged as well. Asahi Shibmun Newspaper shows several photos of those.
Obviously it will take a long time for “mashiko-yaki” people to recover from all of the damages that occurred last month. But they are determined to hold their annual pottery market this month. Mashiko town holds a huge market twice a year—in spring and autumn—every year. Apparently thousands people visit there from all over the country every year. The market will be held between the 29th of April and the 5th of May 2011 (originally planned till the 8th of May though). Please go to the market if you have a chance.
