Have you ever heard of Harumi Kurihara?

Harumi Kurihara is one of the most popular Japanese food writers. Mrs Kurihara has published some English books as well—the book in the above photo is one of them. If you are interested, you can buy this book in bookshops in New Zealand as well.

I just happened to find this site the other day—which shows how Mrs Kurihara learnt cooking at the first place. She did not go to a cookery school or intend to be a professional food writer; she simply learnt and mastered cooking while she was helping her mother in the kitchen.

Kurihara’s mum is not a professional cook either. Her mum has always cooked at home for her family and people who used to work at her late husband’s printing shop. Her mum has always cared her family and the employees. Mrs Kurihara was told since she was little to help her mum and the people working in the shop and she did. That’s how she learnt cooking.

Quite a few people nowadays in Japan as well as New Zealand rarely cook at home. They just buy food. It is sometimes a good way to survive our busy lives. And it could be a great treat as well. However, it would not be so good if we would do this really often; it would be costly and not good for our health. I have read quite a few newspaper articles in New Zealand claiming that we are now facing a possibility of losing culinary skills which all of us used to have…

I hope people would start cooking again and children would learn cooking in the Kurihara’s way.
