昨日[きのう]、日本[にほん]で参議院[さんぎいん](= Upper house)選挙[せんきょ](= election)がありました。与党[よとう](= the ruling party)の自民党[じみんとう](= LDP; The Liberal Democratic Party)が圧勝[あっしょう](= big win)しました。
Upper house election took place in Japan yesterday and the ruling party, currently, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), won comfortably.
前[ぜん](= former)与党[よとう]の民主党[みんしゅとう](= the Democratic Party)は、これまでになく議席[ぎせき](= seats)を減[へ]らしました。民主党[みんしゅとう]は、2011年日本[にほん]で地震[じしん](= earthquake)が起[お]きたときの与党[よとう]です。去年[きょねん]12月、衆議院[しゅうぎいん]選挙[せんきょ](= Lower house election)がありました。このとき、自民党[じみんとう]が勝[か]ちました(= won)。民主党[みんしゅとう]はこのときも衆議院[しゅうぎん]での議席[ぎせんき]を大[おお]きく(= hugely)減[へ]らしました。
今回[こんかい]の選挙[せんきょ](= election)の結果[けっか](= outcomes)は、何[なに]を意味[いみ]するのでしょうか。現在[げんざい]の安倍[あべ]首相[しゅしょう](= PM Abe)、およびその政府[せいふ](= government)がこれまでしてきたことが強[つよ]く(= strongly)支持[しじ]されている(= be supported)のでしょうか。確[たし]かに(= certainly)、安倍[あべ]首相[しゅしょう]の経済[けいざい](= economic)政策[せいさく](= policies, strategies)（アベノミックス、と呼[よ]ばれていますね）は機能[きのう]して(= to function)いるようです。そして、評価[ひょうか]もされている(= to be highly regarded)ようです。
しかし、与党[よとう]は、原発[げんぱつ](= NNP, Nuclear Power Plant)を推進[すいしん]している(= to push forward)んですよ。本当[ほんとう]に、日本[にほん]の全[ぜん]国民[こくみん](= the nation)が原発[げんぱつ]推進[すいしん]策[さく](= policy)を支持[しじ]しているんでしょうか。私[わたし]には分[わ]かりません。。。

The former ruling party, the Democratic Party, lost its seats really badly. This party was reasonably strong when the 2011 earthquake occurred. When the lower house election occurred last year, the LDP won as well. So should we take the outcomes of the election this weekend as an indication that the nation has actually approved what PM Abe and his leading government have done so far? His economic policies (people call this “Abenomics”!) seem to be working and highly regarded. But what about NPP? The current government is for NPP and so on… Is this okay with the majority in Japan? I am not sure about it…
