Seats for loners

I read an interesting report which somehow presents (I think!) Japanese mentality on Asahi Shimbun Newspaper the other day.

The report is about “botch seki”. “Botch” is come from a Japanese word “hitori botch” meaning “being alone” and “seki” means “seat”. This type of seats have appeared in a student cafeteria on campus of Kyoto University, Japan. Basically these are seats arranged for people who want to eat lunch or whatever in the cafeteria alone. Please access to this page to see photos of “botch seki”.

Why don’t they just go there, sit alone and eat? Some Japanese people think it would not look right if they would do that as it might imply that you have no friends to eat with. Then tadah! – this type of “botch-seat” would scrape away such an embarrassing feeling – sitting there clearly shows that you have chosen to be there alone to eat alone! Some other Japanese also think this would be convenient when you would like to eat lunch quickly – it would send a clear message to others: you want to be there alone! The other people would conclude that you have certain reasons for wanting to be alone and they would respect your will!

You might think this is weird. Apparently these “botch seki” are quite popular. Would you like to sit there and eat alone!?

  • One of the things I enjoy the most in Japan, is often you end up sitting next to strangers in restaurants and cafes. When a stranger sits next to me, often we end up talking and I can make a friend.
With these ぼっち席 that wouldn’t really happen. A bit of a lost opportunity, in my opinion.
