朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]で信[しん]じられないすばらしいニュースを読[よ]みました。ある漁師[りょうし] (= fisher man)が1人で漁[りょう] (= fishing)に出[で]ていました。午後[ごご]4時半[はん]ごろ大[おお]きな波[なみ] (= wave)で海[うみ]に落[お]ちてしまいました。船[ふね]は自動[じどう]操舵[そうだ] (= automated sailing)でどんどん離[はな]れて(= to be apart)いってしまいました。この漁師[りょうし]の山下[やました]さん、どうしたでしょうか。
I just read unbelievable news on Asahi Shimbun newspaper. A fisher man who went out in a boat by himself dropped in the ocean as big wave hit him. That was around 4.30 pm. Unfortunately the boat started going away from him as the automated sailing system had set in. So what did he do?
山下[やました]さんは岸[きし] (= shore)に向[む]かって泳[およ]ぎだしたのです。2時間[じかん]ほどで無事[ぶじ]に(= safely)岸[きし]に着[つ]きましたが、とても疲[つか]れてそこで寝[ね]てしまいました。どのくらい寝[ね]ていていたかわかりませんが、起[お]きたときはももう真[ま]っ暗[くら](= dark)でした。それから山下[やました]さんは一番[いちばん]近[ちか]くのコンビニ(= convenient store; 24 hr-open store)まで3km歩[ある]かなければいけませんでした。そこで、タクシーを呼[よ]んでもらいました。
その夜[よる]、山下[やました]家[け]にはいろいろな人[ひと]が集[あつ]まって(= to gather)いました。山下[やました]さんの奥[おく]さん(= wife)はお葬式[そうしき] (= funeral)のことを考[かんが]えていたそうです。午前[ごぜん]4時半[はん]ごろ突然[とつぜん] (= suddenly)「タクシー代[だい]、払[はら]ってくれ!」との声[こえ] (= voice)が。奥[おく]さんはご主人[しゅじん] (= husband)の幽霊[ゆうれい] (= ghost)が来[き]たのだと思[おも]ったそうです。
この山下[やました]さんのすばらしい生還[せいかん] (= returning)が叶[かな]った(= happened)のは、山下[やました]さんが冬用[ふゆよう] (= winter version)の救命[きゅうめい]胴衣[どうい] (= life jacket)を着[き]ていたから。ちなみに、この山下[やました]さん、71才だそうです!!
Mr Yamashita started swimming towards the shore. He managed to get to the shore in a couple of hours. Since he was extremely exhausted, he just fell in asleep there. Mr Yamashita does not remember how long he slept. When he wake up, it was completely dark. Then Mr Yamashita needed to walk for 3 km to reach the nearest shop to ask to call for a taxi.
At the night, everybody at the Yamashita’s household thought of the worst scenario. Mrs Yamashita started thinking of the funeral. Around 4.30am, Mrs Yamashita heard the voice saying “pay for the taxi ride!”. She thought that must be the ghost of her husband!
Anyway Mr Yamashita made the remarkable returning as he wore a winter-version life jacket. By the way, Mr Yamashita is 71 years old!!
