Mata hara

I wrote about the incident happened in Tokyo local government the other day. This is not an isolated incident just in Tokyo.

An article in Asahi Shimbun Newspaper shows how deep and huge the issues related to low birth rate and lack of support to women are. This article mentions the experience Mayu Murakami, a female councillor from Osaka local government, had.

Ms Murakami joined Osaka city council in 2011 and got married in the same year. She gave birth in 2012. When she found herself pregnant, Ms Murakami checked how she should take maternity leave. And she could not find any mentioning to maternity leave in any documents – Ms Murakami was the first person taking such leave in the council. She went back to work six weeks after the birth. Then one of her fellow councillors shouted abuse at her like “apologize for giving birth to your voters!”. Mr Murakami also encountered a voter from her electoral district shouting at her like “Chuo Ward and your child, which one is more important!!” (NB. Murakami was elected at Chuo Ward, Osaka city).

What a situation Japanese female is in… (by the way, the title of this post "Mata hara" is a term Japanese media uses for Maternity Harassment).
