昨日[きのう]、ハミルトンで火事[かじ]がありました（ここでそのニュースが読[よ]めます）。原因[げんいん](= cause)は花火[はなび]だったようです。
A house in Hamilton caught fire last night (you can read the news here); it seemed due to fireworks some youngstars were playing with at the nearby street.
ニュージーランドに住[す]んでいない人[ひと]は「それで? ガイ・フォークスって何[なに]?」と思[おも]っているかもしれません。ガイ・フォークスは17世紀[せいき](= century)にいた英国人[えいこくじん]の名前[なまえ]です。詳[くわ]しいことは(= for more detail)、ウィキペディアなどで調[しら]べてみてください。
ともかく。ニュージーランドの人[ひと]にとって、ガイ・フォークスは11月5日、花火[はなび]で遊[あそ]んでもいい日[ひ]です。このときだけ、私[わたし]たちは花火[はな]を売[う]ったり、買[か]ったり、そして遊[あそ]んだりすることができます。今年[ことし]は、11月2日から5日までの間[あいだ]、いろいろな店[みせ]で花火[はなび]が売[う]られていました。このとき以外[いがい]は、花火[はなび]をしてはいけません（勿論[もちろん]、特別[とくべつ]な許可[きょか](= permission)をもらったら、花火[はなび]を使[つか]ってもいいです）。
毎年[まいとし]、特[とく]に若[わか]い人[ひと]たちが気[き]をつけなくて、今日[きょう]のニュースにあるような事故[じこ]が起[お]こります。これはほんの一例[いちれい]で、ほかにもたくさん花火[はなび]の問題[もんだい]があります。それで、最近[さいきん]では多[おお]くの人[ひと]が花火[はなび]を禁止[きんし]する(= to ban)べきだと考[かんが]えています。
日本人[にほんじん]の私[わたし]にとってこれはとても不思議[ふしぎ]です。日本[にほん]では、一年中[いちねんじゅう](= all year around) いつでも花火[はなび]をすることができます。でも、花火[はなび]の問題[もんだい]のニュースをほとんど聞[き]きません。ニュージーランドではどうしてこんなに問題[もんだい]になるのでしょうか。。。
People reading this blog outside New Zealand might be saying "So? What is Guy Fawks, then?". Guy Fawkes is a person's name; Mr Fawkes existed in the 17 Century in UK. Please have a look at Wikipedia or something for more details. Anyway, for us, people in New Zealand, Guy Fawkes means 5 November and the day we are allowed to play with fireworks. We could buy fireworks at all sorts of shops between 2 and 5 November this year. We are not allowed to sell, buy or play with fireworks for the rest of the year unless you gain a permission to do so.
Some people (often young people) are not careful enough with fireworks and an incident such as one I read on newspaper today happens. This is the tip of the iceberg and so many incidents/issues have been reported; therefore, quite a few people now believe that we should be completely banned from playing with fireworks all year around.
It is quite funny to me as a Japanese; in Japan people can play with fireworks anytime and I have not heard so much news on fireworks-related incidents like this. What is going on here, in New Zealand???
