蹴鞠 Japanese ancient football

蹴鞠[けまり]を知[し]っていますか。 Have you heard of kemari?

[うえ]のユーチューブを見[み]てください。これは、日本[にほん]の古[ふる]いゲームです。参加[さんか]する(= to participate)人は、着物[きもの]を着[き]ています。ボールをけりますが、サッカーとは全然[ぜんぜん][ちが]います。

これは、2日前に、奈良県[ならけん]の神社[じんじゃ](= shinto shrine)で行[おこな]われました。面白[おもしろ]いですね。

It is a bit difficult to explain how it works; so please have a look at the above YouTube footage. They start playing around 0.50.

This is a sort of ancient game (so we do not play it in our everyday life). People are supposed to kick a ball but it is utterly different from the football.

The above footage shows the demonstration done at Shinto Shrine in Nara prefecture a couple of days ago. Isn't it interesting!
