ニュージーランドにもやっと夏[なつ]が来[き]ました。今日[きょう]のハミルトンの最高[さいこう]気温[きおん](= highest)は、24度[ど]だそうです。日本[にほん]はたくさん雪[ゆき]が降[ふ]ってとても寒[さむ]そうです。
Summer has finally come to New Zealand. Today's high in Hamilton will be around 24 degrees. Japan, however, seems very cold with a lot of snow right now.
写真[しゃしん]は、マンリョウです。赤[あか]と緑[みどり]で、とてもクリスマスな感[かん]じです。これは日本[にほん]では、お正月[しょうがつ](= the new year)の飾[かざ]り(= decoration)によく使[つか]います。赤[あか]と緑[みどり]で色[いろ]がきれいです。そして、マンリョウという名前[なまえ]から、たくさんのお金[かね]を連想[れんそう]する(= to evoke)ので（※マンは万[まん]、両[りょう]はむかしのお金[かね]の単位[たんい](= unit)）、縁起[えんぎ]がいい(= good luck)、と考[かんが]えます。だから、お正月[しょうがつ]にふさわしい(= appropriate)と考[かんが]えるのです。

The above photo shows a plant called manryo in Japanese. The colour, red and green, looks very Christmassy! This plant is often used for the New Year decoration in Japan. It looks pretty; this is one reason for the decoration. It also evokes prosperity to us. Why does it so? – the name manryo means a lot of money as man is ten thousands (it represnts a lot of amount) and ryo is old Japanese money unit (like yen).
