日本語[にほんご]を勉強[べんきょう]している人[ひと]は、国[くに]の名前[なまえ]を知[し]っていますよね。例[たと]えば、U.K. やNew Zealandは日本語[にほんご]で、どう書[か]くか — はい、イギリスとニュージーランドです。そして、U.K.は英国と書くこともあります。U.S. やFranceもアメリカ、米国、そして、フランス、仏国と２つ書[か]き方[かた]があります。
If you study Japanese, you know how to describe all sorts of countries in Japanese; for example, U.K is イギリスand New Zealand is ニュージーランド. The difference between U.K and New Zealand in this context is that U.K. has an abbreviated version, which is 英国 but New Zealand does not. U.S. has 米国France has 仏国etc. but no alternative for ニュージーランド.
ニュージーランドは、8つのカタカナですから、8つのスペースが必要[ひつよう] (= necessary)です。ニュージーランド政府[せいふ] (= government)は、これはとても長[なが]いので、紙[かみ] (= paper)のメディアにはよくないと考[かんが]えました。1980年[ねん]日本[にほん]のニュージーランド大使館[たいしかん] (= embassy)は、日本[にほん]新聞[しんぶん]協会[きょうかい] (= association)にニュージーランドを乳国と書[か]くようにお願[ねが]いしました（朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]で読[よ]みました）。乳はmilkという意味[いみ]です!! この書[か]き方[かた]を私[わたし]は見[み]たことがありません。ニュージーランドはふつう乳国とは書[か]きません。
とにかく(= anyway)、朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]の記事[きじ] (= article)には、ニュージーランドの乳産業[にゅうさんぎょう] (= dairy industry)について詳[くわ]しく(= in detailed)紹介[しょうかい]しています。ニュージーランドが、バターと全粉乳[ぜんふんにゅう] (= milk powder)の輸出[ゆしゅつ] (= export)量[りょう] (= volume)で世界一[せかいいち]というのを知[し]っていますか。すごいでしょう! もっといろいろ知[し]りたい人[ひと]は、朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]のこの記事[きじ]を読[よ]んでみてください。
ニュージーランドtakes eight spaces if it appears in text; its government thought that this would be disadvantage in terms of exposure in Japanese media. New Zealand Embassy in Japan, therefore, made a request to Japanese newspapers association in1980 to use 乳国 (which takes only two spaces) to describe New Zealand! 乳 means milk (I learnt this in Asahi Shimbun Newspaper)!!
