みなさん、楽しいクリスマスを過ごしましたか。Did you have a good Christmas?
ところで、日本ではクリスマスは祝日[しゅくじつ](= public holiday)ではありません。知っていましたか。12月25日においしい料理を食べたり、パーティをしたりする人もいます。でも、祝日ではないので、12月25日は、学校も店も銀行も全部開いています。
26日もふつうの日です。特別なセールはありません。ニュージーランドは、25日は祝日で、お店は全部閉まります（観光地[かんこうち](= touristy areas)など一部除く）。26日はボクシング・デー。多くの店で大きなセールがあり、とても大勢[おおぜい]の人が買い物に出かけます。昨日待ちに出かけたら、道は渋滞[じゅうたい](= traffic congestion)になっていました!
みなさん、交通事故[こうつうじこ](= traffic accident)には気をつけてください。
By the way, the 25th of December is NOT a public holiday in Japan; did you know that? Quite a few people eat special meal and hold a party on the day, but they have to work – schools, shops and banks are all open and business as usual (Note that kids do not go to school as it is during a winter holiday but staff have to be there for work)! The 26th is another ordinary day and there is no special sale in Japan.
In New Zealand, as you know, all shops are closed on the 25th (apart from touristy areas) and on the 26th, there is huge sale everywhere known as Boxing day-sale. I went out yesterday and encountered traffic congestion (which we usually do not have in Hamilton!)
