English mistakes are not necessarily grammar mistakes…
I saw a NZ friend the other day. Since we had not seen each other for a while, we naturally talked about each other's family. Here is the conversation we had:
Friend: So how's your family?
Me: Well, they are fine. Since the weather is really good in Japan now, they do a lot of outdoor activities.
Friend: Oh, true.
This conversation is okay in Japanese, but the above conversation in English sounds weird. I actually noticed that the friend looked a bit puzzled when I started talking about 'the weather' then. I later realised that I should not have talked like that in English. You've got to mention 'outcomes' first in English; I should have mentioned 'outdoor activities' first and then added background info next. I was speaking in English but thinking in Japanese ovbiously…
Communication in another language is always challenging and interesting!
