今日は何の日でしょう? What is the day today?
はい、今日は、有名[ゆうめい]なスコットランド人の詩人[しじん](= poet)、ロバート･バーンズが生まれた日です! 18世紀[せいき](= the 18th Century)後半[こうはん](= the second half)の人でした。
スコットランドでとても愛[あい]された詩人で、毎年、バーンズ氏[し]の誕生日[たんじょうび]、もしくは、近い日に「バーンズ氏の夕べ/夕食[ゆうしょく]」という集[あつ]まり(= gathering)をスコットランド人の人たちが催[もよお]します(= to hold)。先日[せんじつ]、その集まりにご招待[しょうたい]されて(= to be invited)、上の写真[しゃしん]を撮[と]りました(テーブルの上の布[ぬの](= cloth)はスコットランドの旗[はた](= flag)です)。
It is Robert Burns's birthday today! He was born and died in the 18th Century and much loved by Scottish people. Scottish people all over the world get together and celebrate his life and poetry on/or near his birthday every year; this gathering is called 'Burns night/supper. I was invited to the gathering organised by Scottish friends the other day. The cloth you can see on the table in the above photo is the flag of Scotland!
