日本の選挙 Election in Japan

先週[せんしゅう][まつ]、日本ではいろいろなところで選挙[せんきょ](= election)がありました。多分[たぶん]、もっとも注目[ちゅうもく]されていたのは、東京[とうきょう]の都議会[とぎかい](= the Tokyo Metropolitan assembly)の選挙[せんきょ]でしょう。ニュージーランドヘラルド紙[し]でも昨日小さく報[ほう]じていました。詳[くわ]しく(= in detail)英語で読みたい人は、例[たと]えばロイターの記事[きじ]があります。

Local elections took place at a few places in Japan last weekend. The Tokyo Metropolitan assembly election made headlines in particular. The New Zealand Herald reported yesterday:

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party has suffered an historic defeat in an election in the Japanese capital
