Entrance ceremony

これは毎[まい]学期[がっき](= each term)、はじめに(= at the beginning)全校[ぜんこう]の生徒(= all school pupils)が集[あつ]まって、式をします。

It is April now. A new academic year has just started in Japan; Japanese schools hold an entrance ceremony in April every year.

In New Zealand, kids start going to school once they turn to five years old. In Japan, all kids start going to school in April when they are six years old; yes, everybody starts their school days at a same time. Schools welcome their new pupils by holding an entrance ceremony.  New Zealand does not hold an entrance ceremony (it does hold a graduation ceremony though).

Japan also holds a 'beginning-term' ceremony for current pupils. All pupils get together and have a ceremony to kick off their new term. The school principal often gives a speech and a few more teachers speaks there about something new/important.
