This coming weekend is Easter weekend. In Japanese, Easter is called īsutā or fukkatsusai (復活祭).
When I came to New Zealand for the first time, I was surprised to find that all shops were closed on Good Friday—even big franchised supermarkets! Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in New Zealand, but that’s not the case in Japan. By the way, Christmas is also a public holiday in New Zealand, and—now you might guess—yes, that’s not the case in Japan🎄.
この週末[しゅうまつ]は、イースターの週末です。イースターは、日本語で復活祭[ふっかつさい]とも言います。
私がはじめてニュージーランドに来た時、イースターの金曜日にお店が全部[ぜんぶ]閉[し]まっていてびっくりしました。大きなスーパーも閉まっていました。イースターの金曜日とイースター月曜日は、ニュージーランドでは祝日[しゅくじつ]です。でも、日本では祝日ではありません。そして、クリスマスもニュージーランドでは祝日です。日本では－もうわかりますよね－はい、日本では、クリスマスも祝日ではありません🎄
