NOT!!!
I thought I’d seen a fair bit of nonsense but this one was new to me. It’s one of several pseudoscientific claims that are due for a right royal debunking next month. Unfortunately this is in the UK – let’s hope the lecture is available on-line after the event.
Number8Dave says:
This reminds me of an old folk remedy for bloat in dairy cattle, which required that a drench be administered via the left nostril. In this case I think the rationale was that the left side of the cow always blows up before the right side – but this is because of rumen anatomy. Obviously you can’t get treatment to the left side of the animal in tis way!
I remember seeing the classical music story being deconstructed on Penn and Teller’s Bullshit! one time. They interviewed the guy who had done the original study, which showed a slight improvement in cognitive function in adult subjects for a period of a few minutes after listening to Mozart. He was very quick to say this had no bearing on the subsequent claims (and commercial products) based on the notion that playing Mozart to babies would make them more intelligent.
