Japan experienced a huge earthquake and tsunami nine years ago today; yes, I am talking about the Great East Japan Earthquake. Nearly 50,000 people still live somewhere temporarily. Many people got together to mark the date today for the past years, but not this year – due to COVID-19 (people in Japan are strongly recommended to avoid crowds).
9年前の今日、日本では大きな地震[じしん](= earthquake)と津波[つなみ](= tsunami)がありました。そうです、東日本[ひがしにほん]大震災[だいしんさい](= the Great East Japan Earthquake)です。5万人近くの人たちがまだ、自分の家に帰れません。これまでは、人々は3月11日に集[あつ]まって、追悼式[ついとうしき](= commemoration ceremony)をしていましたが、今年はしない人が多いです。コロナウイルスのため、多くの人がいるところに行かないようにしているからです。
