It is the 5th of May, Children’s Day in Japan and it’s a statutory holiday today. Entrance ceremony

これは毎[まい]学期[がっき](= each term)、はじめに(= at the beginning)全校[ぜんこう]の生徒(= all school pupils)が集[あつ]まって、式をします。 It is April now. A new academic year has just started in Japan; Japanese schools hold an entrance ceremony in April every year. In New Zealand, kids start going to school once they turn to five years old. In […]

Dolls festival today

この日に向けて、2月から特別[とくべつ]な人形[にんぎょう](= dolls)を飾[かざ]ります(= to decorate; to put something out)。 I wrote about this a few times in the past, but anyway it is hina matsuri (= dolls festival) today in Japan. The households with daughters celebrate today wishing their girls’ happiness and prosperity. We put special dolls out sometime in February to […]

Sports in New Zealand

New Zealand got two medals and Japan got 13 medals. The Olympics is indeed a big deal, but it seems that seasonal sports are picked up so much more often by media in New Zealand. It is indeed in the middle of cricket season in […]

Snow and Gyoza!

I wrote about heavy snow in Japan the other day. Another news about heavy snow has come in – this time, snow has fallen in the Fukui Prefecture-areas (you can read about this here, for example). Due to this massive snow fall, trains and airplanes have been cancelled. Many cars have been stuck […]

Snow, snow, snow!

昨日の東京の様子[ようす](= situation)をここで見ることができます:https://youtu.be/JgUSyVJOZps Tokyo and the nearby areas experienced massive amount of snow yesterday. Narita Airport had to be closed and the Rainbow Bridge had to be closed too (then many cars were forced to stay over the bridge for a while). Apparently such massive snow […]
