日本人[にほんじん]は英語[えいご]を話[はな]す人[ひと]たちと比[くら]べてあまりほめない(homeru means to praise; to give compliments)ようです。
Japanese seem not to give compliments so often as American people.
このサイトには、安藤[あんどう]さんという日本人[にほんじん]のブログがあります。安藤[あんどう]さんは今[いま]、ニューヨークに住[す]んでいます。そして英語[えいご]の勉強[べんきょう]をしながら、料理[りょうり]の学校[がっこう]へ通[かよ]って(= to commute)います。5月1日付[づ]け(= as of)のブログに、アメリカ人[じん]がよくほめる、と書[か]いてありました。例[たと]えば、グループで料理[りょうり]を作[つく]った時[とき]、誰[だれ]かが必[かなら]ず(= always)「We did a great job!」と言[い]うそうです。それから、安藤[あんどう]さんがとても簡単[かんたん]な料理[りょうり]を作[つく]った時[とき]も、アメリカ人[じん]はとてもほめるのだそうです。私[わたし]もニュージーランドに来[き]たばかりの時[とき]は、とてもびっくりしました。
確[たし]かに(= indeed)、ポライトネスの勉強[べんきょう]や異文化[いぶんか]間[かん] (= cross-cultural)コミュニケーションの勉強[べんきょう]をすると「日本人[にほんじん]と英語人[えいごじん]のコミュニケーションは違[ちが]うなあ」とよく思[おも]います。
私[わたし]は、今[いま]は前[まえ]に比[くら]べて、ほかの人[ひと]をほめることができるようになりました。ポジティブなコメントをほかの人にあげることができたとき、とても嬉[うれ]しくなります。
This site presents Ms Ando’s blog. Ms Ando is a Japanese living in New York. She studies English and cooking there. I found her comment (as of 1 May) saying that American people often give compliments. For example, when Ms Ando and her classmates cooked something together, somebody among them always said something like “we did a great job!” Even when Ms Ando prepared really simple food, she was praised so much that it a bit embarrassed her. I remember that sort of feeling I had when I came here, to New Zealand at the first time.
Academic research regarding politeness and cross-cultural communication indicates various differences between Japanese and English-speaking people. Studies on compliment-behaviour (giveing as well as receiving) also shows differences.
I am okay with compliments in English now (at least better than before!) and I can now give compliments to others. When I manage to do that, it makes me feel really good.
