今日[きょう]は何[なん]の日[ひ]か知[し]っていますか。広島[ひろしま]原爆[げんばく]記念日[きねんび]です。私[わたし]は広島[ひろしま]県[けん]で育[そだ]ったので、毎年[まいとし]8月6日になると必[なから]ずこの日のことを思[おも]い出[だ]します。64年[ねん]前[まえ]の今日[きょう]、午前[ごぜん]8時15分に広島[ひろしま]に原爆[げんばく]が落[お]とされました。 

 Do you know what sort of day today is?  It’s Hiroshima Day today.  I grew up in Hiroshima prefecture and naturally think of it when the day is approaching every year.  Sixty four years ago, an atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima – that was at 8.15 in the morning.
 

当時[とうじ]、日本の軍隊[くんたい]はいろいろなところで酷[ひど]いことをしていました。だから原爆[げんばく]を落[お]とされて当然[とうぜん]だ、という意見[いけん]が今も強[つよ]くあります。私はここでその是非[ぜひ]について話[はな]すつもりはありません。ただ、みなさんに知[し]ってほしいのは、原爆[げんばく]を使[つか]った戦争[せんそう]は本当[ほんとう]に恐[おそ]ろしいのだということです。落[お]とされた日からもう64年も経[た]っているのに、まだ私[わたし]たちはそれを忘[わす]れることができません。例[たと]えば、私[わたし]には広島[ひろしま]出身[しゅっしん]の友[とも]だちがいます。彼[かれ]らのおじいさん、おばあさんはその時[とき]広島[ひろしま]にいて、原爆[げんばく]を受[う]けました。その友[とも]だちが今、お父[とう]さん、お母[かあ]さんになって、自分[じぶん]たちの子どもに「絶対[ぜったい]原爆[げんばく]の影響[えいきょう]がない!」と言[い]うことはできません。それは、どんな科学者[かがくしゃ]もそんな実験[じっけん]をしたことがないので100％のことはわからないのです。

 
世界[せかい]から戦争[せんそう]が完全[かんぜん]になくなることを強[つよ]く祈[いの]ります。
  
At the time, Japanese army did all sorts of unspeakable things at all sorts of places.  Some people still strongly believe that Japan deserved to receive atomic bomb attack because of that.  I am not going to discuss this point here today.  I just would like to remind you how awful this type of attack is.  It has already been sixty four years on, but we still cannot forget about it.  For example, I have friends originally from Hiroshima city whose grandparents were there 64 years ago.  They, my friends, have now become mothers and fathers and they still have to fear for their children’s health.  It is because nobody can tell anything for definite when it comes to the influence from the radiation of the bomb etc. to human beings for long period of time.  My friends are now fine, but who knows what will happen to them or their children next year, in five years and so on… That’s the power of this type of weapon.
 

I really do hope all wars completely disappear from the world
