Actor and auteur Takeshi Kitano wrote, directed, edited, and starred in this unusual crime drama. "Hana-Bi" is a poignant tale of tragic loss, and of our reactions to such loss, in a world rife with contradiction. Those viewers expecting the over-the-top action of Takeshi’s Asian peers will be disappointed–his films are more European in flavor, atmospheric both in intent and execution. But once you overcome the initial aversion to the idiosyncrasies of Takeshi Kitano’s minimalist style, you will begin to understand why he is considered one of the world’s foremost directors.

Film presented by the Consulate-General of Japan, The University of Waikato, The Japan Cultural Centre, Sydney (The Japan Foundation).
