みなさまご存知[ぞんじ]のように、昨日[きのう]クライストチャーチで大[おお]きな地震[じしん] (= earthquake)が起[お]きました。9月[がつ]にも地震[じしん]がありました。9月[がつ]の時[とき]はマグニチュード7を越[こ]えました。今回[こんかい]は、6.3でした。でも、震源地[しんげんち] (= epicentre)が地表[ちひょう] (= surface)に近[ちか]かったので、被害[ひがい] (= damage)がとても大[おお]きくなっています。

As you know, Christchurch was hit by a big earthquake yesterday. It happened in September last year and the size was magnitude 7.1 at that time. This time it was 6.3. However, the epicenter this time was closer to the surface than the last time and we have experienced bigger damage now.
