これは何でしょう? Do you know what this is?
これは、杉玉[すぎだま]と言[い]います。杉[すぎ](= ceder)の葉[は](= leaves)で作[つく]ります。先日[せんじつ]、朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]に、杉玉[すぎだま]を作[つく]っているというニュースがありました。朝日[あさひ]新聞[しんぶん]のこのページには動画[どうが](= motion picture)もありますよ。
杉玉[すぎだま]は造[つく]り酒屋[さかや](= sake factory)などの前[まえ]に飾[かざ]ります(= to decorate)。そして、これは新酒[しんしゅ](= new sake)ができたことを知[し]らせるしるし(= sign)なのだそうです。昔[むかし]は、酒[さけ]の神[かみ]さまに感謝[かんしゃ](= gratitude)を示[しめ]す(= to express)意味[いみ]があった、とも言[い]われています。なぜ、杉[すぎ]の葉[は]を使[つか]うかというと。。。私[わたし]は知[し]りません。知[し]っている人[ひと]がいたら、是非[ぜひ]、教[おし]えてください!
This is called sugidama. Sugi is cedar and dama is ball. As it says, this is made of leaves of cedar. Asahi Shimbun Newspaer reported about the production of sugidama in Gifu prefecture; apparently they are busy making sugidama now. This page of Asahi Shimbun shows a motion picture of making sugidama as well.
Sugidama is decorated in front of sake factories to tell people that new sake is now ready. It also meant to express the gratitude to God of sake in the past. Why do people use leaves of cedar to make sugidama? – I have no idea. If you know the answer, please let me know!
