今日の新聞[しんぶん]で(http://www.asahi.com/national/update/0709/OSK200907090183.html)大阪[おおさか]のある街[まち]でカタツムリ、それもフランス料理[りょうり]などでよく使[つか]われる種類[しゅるい]のものが多[おお]く見[み]つかった、とのニュースを読[よ]みました。
ふつうの日本のカタツムリではなく、エスカルゴとして、フランス料理[りょうり]のメニュに使[つか]われる種類[しゅるい]だそうです。どうして外国[だいこく]のカタツムリが突然[とつぜん]現[あらわ]れたか、はっきりわかりませんが、多分[たぶん]食材[しょくざい](shokuzai is cooking ingredients)として持[も]ち込[こ]まれたものが逃[に]げ出して、ふつうの街[まち]でどんどん育[そだ]って増[ふ]えていったのではないかと考[かんが]えられています。
カタツムリは野菜[やさい]をどんどん食[た]べてしまうので、私[わたし]たちにとっては困[こま]りものです。これから対策[たいさく]がとられるそうです。
I read a report about snail incident occurred in a residential area in Osaka today (see http://www.asahi.com/national/update/0709/OSK200907090183.html). It says there were many snails found there which were European-origin type and not ordinary Japanese kind.
The type of snail is normally used for French dishes as escargot. Nobody knows why they are there for sure but some guesses that somebody brought them in for cooking, lucky ones managed to escape from the kitchen, and then they started a family out there!
They eat all sorts of vegetables which is not a good news for us. The residents in the area will hold a seminar to learn how to deal with the problem!
