ニュージーランドの公用語[こうようご]は、英語、マオリ語、そして手話[しゅわ](= sign language)です。でも、ニュージーランドのほとんどの人々[ひとびと]は毎日英語を使[つか]います。
とにかく、最近[さいきん](= recently)、マオリ語[ご]使用[しよう](= use)を強く推進[すいしん]する(= to advocate)人々がグループでマクドナルドに行きました。ヘイスティングにあるマクドナルドです。この人たちは、マオリ語を毎日ふつうに使おうと頑[がん]張[ば]っています。ですから、マクドナルドのカウンターでマオリ語で注文[ちゅうもん]してみました。すると！－その時、カウンターで働[はたら]いていた17歳のジャーション・タタナさんは、注文[ちゅうもん]を受[う]け付[つ]け(= to receive)、そして、ちゃんとマオリ語で応対[おうたい]しました(= responded)! そのグループの1人ジェレミーさんはニュージーランドヘラルド紙[し]に語[かた]りました（以下[いか]の(= the following)引用[いんよう]文[ぶん](= quotation)を見てください）。
ヘラルド紙によると、ジャーションさんは学校でマオリ語を勉強[べんきょう]したそうです。学校での語学[ごがく](= language)の勉強はすばらしいです。本当にすてきなエピソードですね！
The answers are English, Maori and Sign language. However, most people use English in their everyday lives.
Anyway, recently a group of Maori-language enthusiasts went to Hastings McDonald. They put an effort to normalise Maori language and one of them went to the counter and put their breakfast order in Maori and guess what – 17 yr Jershon Tatana, a clerk at the counter, took the order and communicated with his customer in Maori no problem! Jeremy Tatere McLeod, the language advocate who was there, says (quoted from New Zealand Herald; the Japanese translation is mine);
He started speaking back – we were absolutely blown away. We were very pleasantly surprised.
We need to make the language relevant to our children. If they don't see any relevance why would they bother learning it?
He [Tatana] is an outstanding role model for young people and the future of our language rests with his generation.

According to the New Zealand Herald, Jershon learnt Maori at school! Language learning at school is cool! What a fantastic story!!
